In June, the battle rap world, as well as Hip Hop in general, lost one of it’s underground legends when Robert “Pumpkinhead” Diaz — or PH, as he was also known — passed away following a minor surgery.
According to Chris Mitchell of BattleRap.com, after a summer of petitioning, the veteran MC will finally have a street in his Brooklyn, New York, neighborhood named after him.
“For many, PH’s name was already synonymous with Park Slope, Brooklyn. Now it’s official. Fifth Avenue and Degraw will soon be renamed ‘Robert PH Diaz Way’ in honor of the late emcee who grew up nearby, according to Poison Pen’s announcement on Instagram.
The bid to have a Park Slope street named after PH began this summer by friends who thought it only fitting that the rapper’s name grace the streets he represented so vehemently.
An online petition was began first. Once it gained momentum, the bid went before a community board this September, where it was voted on and made official.
For many, this feels like the most appropriate way for such a neighborhood superstar to be honored.
Following his sudden passing, major outlets Billboard and Rolling Stone covered it, noting his influence and impact.
