In 2004, one of hip hop’s rawest MCs, New Jersey’s Rah Digga, recorded an album that never saw the light of day. The album was produced by J Dilla, No I.D., Just Blaze, Hi-Tek, Large Professor and Scott Storch, and included guest verses by Ghostface, Mobb Deep, Snoop, Fabolous, Joe Budden, among others.
Well between her damn near-classic debut “Dirty Harriet” in 2000, and the 2010 follow up “Classic,” Digga was apparently busy constructing a groundbreaking sophomore album. Unfortunately, label politics got in the way.
According to Bandini, writing for Ambrosia for Heads, “J Records absorbed Flipmode Entertainment. As Busta was pivoting to his eventual exit to align with Dr. Dre’s Aftermath imprint, Rah Digga’s ‘Everything Is A Story’ was delayed, before it finally was shelved at Clive Davis’ label. In 2010, gearing up for Classic, Digga shared some tracks. However, this week one fan took the leaked 22-track LP and remastered it to sound quite nice.
If there was ever a time for this album to be reintroduced, it’s now. With the rise of Young M.A., Remy Ma and now Cardi B, there hasn’t been a better time for female MCs. And let’s be clear, the album is a banger and a testament to how the industry often times can be responsible for snuffing out our culture’s light.
Or it could also be an example of how our light never dies.
You be the judge.
